Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 902: Shri Vijnana kalana (ōṃ vijJṇānakalanāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother realizes the knowledge of Brahman.

Vijnana is consciousness or awareness. Kalana is The heavens or Royal one.

She is creating Knowledge of Brahman. We can read, understand, and judge a country’s culture by reading books. We can even deliver good speeches about that country after our reading and understanding of that country. To get such knowledge is due to Kalai-jnana, however, these reading of books gives a bird’s eye view only. When one visits that country, what one can get termed as Vijnana. This is related to universal level of knowledge.

Likewise, from sastras we can learn about divinity, which is called jnana. Through meditation, getting clarity of mind and understanding the divinity is true jnana or Vijnana. Essentially from jnana to get Vijnana is the effort to reach the Brahman, Sri Ramakrishna Bramahamsar gave an example, “we all have learned about cow’s milk; when we see it we learn more to handle that milk. Later when we drink, it gives us a much better experience. To get to know the glories the divinity is equal to drinking cow’s milk. For those who understand the glories of the divinity may have many doubts in his life. Like the river reaching its ultimate, the ocean, for the soul, reaching the Brahman is the ultimate.

The Divine Mother increases Vijnana for Her devotees. There are sixteen (or eighteen) Vidya places where learning can happen. The Divine Mother helps devotees get Vijnana. Kalana helps to increase Vijnana experience for devotees. The Divine Mother grants such Vijnana to Her devotees.

Vijnana is the knowledge of Brahman; Kalana is to realize Brahman for the soul as its own. According to Kurma Purana, Vijnana is referred to the fourteen Vidyas or branches of knowledge. These are four Vedas, the six Vedangas (auxiliaries to Vedas), law, Puranas, Mimamsas (Philosophy) and logic. The Divine Mother has realized the essence of all these Vidyas. She is the seat of all knowledge.
