Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 159: Shri Mada Nasini (OM madanAshinyai namaH)

In Namam 132 to 187, the Divine Mother’s Japarupam or Formlessness will be the described.

The Divine Mother is destroying pride in Her devotees. In earlier Namam 158 “Nir Mada”, we saw that She does not have any pride Herself.

Depending upon the level reached by a soul, a certain amount of pride will be there with in it. Desire and pride are part of growing process in this universe. There are natural means in this universe to destroy their pride through the Divine Mother’s actions. When the desires are not fulfilled, the devotee’s pride will decrease. And, when the devotee realizes that all his desires including that of materialistic nature are obliterated, and salvation is granted by the Divine Mother, his pride will be totally destroyed. The devotee may be very proud to start with, but when he nears the Divine Mother, his pride vanishes and he becomes humble. So She destroys in this process the pride in Her devotees.

This Namam can also be interpreted as “One who destroys or swallows Madana (Kama, the god of desire). Madana creates agitation in devotee’s mind. The Divine Mother destroys such Madana, so that Her devotees are free of agitation, get firmness of mind and reaches their goal of salvation.

So She is Mada Nasini.
