Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 565: Shri Mitra rupini (ōṃ mitrarūpiṇyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is the friend of everyone, the friend of the total universe.

The Divine Mother is very kind to everyone. Our enemies try to hit us, block our actions; every being tries to survive; such actions are training for them. Like enemies, we also have friends; when we liaise with our friends, happiness comes first. The beings try to live longer in this universe due to this aspect of happiness from friends. The Divine Mother represents such happy friendships.

Brahma aspect is applicable to Sun as well. Sun is called Mitra as well. All beings like the presence of Sun, such Sun is representing the Divine Mother, as She had created it in the first place. So, praising the Sun is same as praising the Divine Mother.

For all universal beings, without any expectations, Sun provides; the Sun is a friend. tTere are twelve forms of Sun representing the twelve months in a calendar year. Their names are: Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Poosha, Hiranyagarba, Mareechi, Adiya, Savita,Arka and Bhaskara. The Divine Mother is in all these twelve forms of the Sun.

The Divine Mother is in friend for Her devotees. A good friend prevents someone going in wrong direction; similarly, the Divine Mother prevents Her devotees going n evil ways. So, She is called Mitrarupini

The Sun called Mitra is part of  the Divine Mother

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 564: Shri Mrdani (ōṃ mṛḍānyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is the spouse of Mrda (Lord Shiva).

Lord Shiva gives happiness to everyone. The beings go through three gunas; due to sattvic aspect, they go through enjoyment. So, Shiva is taking Sattvic guna in Mrda form to give happiness. Since the Divine Mother is doing the same action of giving happiness, She, is called Mrdani. Lord Shiva and the Divine Mother are one and the same. This is represented in this Namam. If the souls indulge in enjoyment, they move down in their status, but when the devotee feels that enjoyment is due to the Divine Mother, his status is raised.

Lord Shiva in saving form is also called Mrda. Mrda happiness giving is well known. The Divine Mother is not only the spouse of Mrda; but She is also the giver of happiness to everyone. Mrda is Shiva’s predominantly sattvic aspect.

Lord Shiva as Mrda the happiness giver to all, same as the Divine Mother.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 563: Shri Mukhya (ōṃ mukhyāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is the first in everything.

As the Divine Mother is the first reason, She is called Prana. During pralya, the first creation is called Hiranyagarbha, a name for the Brahma meaning “the golden womb” or creative life force. This identifies the Lord Brahma. So, the first deity takes the many universal beings forms. The Divine Mother is the first reason for this.  To forget the universal sights and to concentrate the ultimate Bramham, is the goal of the soul. The Divine Mother is the reason for the Maya based universe; when we mediate upon that we get the Brahma sight.

When a child is born, the face comes out first. So, the face is respected as important; Brain is there in the head and we consider that as prime. The Divine Mother is the first for all creatures; She is prime among devas. Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva all pray to Her in Sri Chakra Bindu as She is the first and important one.

The Divine Mother is the first, the first Prana or Hiranyagarbha. The Divine Mother has already been praised as Agvaganya the first to be counted. She is not only that but also “the pre-eminent One “I am the first born of the true” (Taittiriya Upanisad 111.10.5)

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 562: Shri Mohini (ōṃ mōhinyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is enchanting (delightfully charming or attractive).

She makes others to be attracted to Her delightful beauty. Those beautiful girls attracting mankind to them are all the form of Mohini Devi, the Divine Mother. As such the Divine Mother is called Jagan Mohini, meaning that She attracts the whole universal beings with her delightful beauty. The goal of universal beings is to reach Brahman before that indulge in bodily pleasures in this birth in this birth. The Divine Mother’s form Mohini Shakti gives the universal beings such pleasure activities; without her grace the beings cannot go further from these enchanting circles.

She is eternally with all Her glories, does appear in Mohini form to contain universal beings. They try to avoid the Kama fire and by praying to the Divine Mother, the move forward to Brahman. If a devotee sees a female as Mohini, he ought to consider him as a child to Her and consider her as part of the Divine Mother. This is an ideal way to escape the Mohini trap.

During churning of the Ocean of Milk, to enchant the asuras and later Lord Shiva, Mahavishnu with the Divine Mother’s blessings, took Mohini fprm. Lord Shiva is attracted to only the Divine Mother, here he was attracted to Mohini Devi as well, who is basically the Divine Mother Herself. She makes the world enchanted by Her. Those who realize the Divine Mother without thinking others, She, converts them to think about Her only. For those without devotion, She, makes them struggle in life in Mohini form. Earlier Namam 558: Kamalaksa nishevita with the meaning that the Divine Mother gives refuge to Lord Mahavishnu, is related to this Namam.

The Divine Mother enchants everyone with Her beauty and makes everyone do Her bidding. Laghu Naradiya Purana says,” O beautiful one, as the whole universe is enchanted with Thee, Thy name, shall be enchanting one.” According to the Brahmanda Purana, as Brahma sat in meditation, Shakti appeared in front of Him as Prakrti, capable of fulfilling the wishes of the gods. This is her first appearance as Mohini.

The second time was during the churning of the Ocean of Milk. Lord Vishnu meditated on the form of Mohini and assumed that form Himself. Vishnu in female form, as Mohini, appeared before the gods and demons who were fighting for the ambrosia or nectar generated by the churning of the ocean. Seeing the Mohini Rupa, the demons decided that it is best to entrust Her with the jar of ambrosia for serving everyone fairly. Mohini laid down one condition that all of them should remain with eyes closed while She is serving and that She would marry the last person to open his eyes. Any order from the enchanting one was acceptable to them all, so everyone sat with eyes closed.

Mohini started serving the ambrosia to the gods first. The demons waited, afraid to open their eyes. After a while Rahu opened his eyes and saw that the Mohini had already served devas. Vishnu killed the Rahu by severing his head with His cakra, thus cutting him into two parts.

4.       There is a temple on the banks of River Pravara (Pravara is the smallest of the major tributaries of Godavari River located in Maharashtra, India. Among the 7 major tributaries, it is the only tributary which originates in the Western Ghats akin to Godavari.). The deity of worship in that temple is Mohini Devi.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 561: Shri Mrgakshi (ōṃ ōṃ mṛgākṣyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother’s eyes are long and beautiful like those of doe (a female deer).

Her eyes are like a female deer’s long eyes. Those eyes are wide open to look after all beings in the universe. She is called Visalakshi, a wide-eyed Goddess; Her temple is in Varnasi (Kasi) in India.  She provides for all beings ‘desires through Her eyesight; She is also called Kamakshi. In Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. Like a fish, She never closes her eyes, She is called Meenakshi in Madura also in Tamil Nadu, India. These three Namams are about Her kindness to provide for Her devotees.

The deer’s eyes have a sweet pure attractiveness. When the deer, is looking at us, we get excited, and we can forget ourselves. For a time, we feel that there is no difference between the deer and us. The Divine Mother’s approach to us is similar, with Her looking at us, we get extreme happiness, and our worldly life will be successful is the meaning of this Namam.

In Mohini form the desires She had not expressed, are spelt out through Her eyes, which is like the deer’s eyes not stopping at one place, but Her sight is all over. It is similar to a girl falling in love and finding it difficult to express Her feelings out.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 560: Shri Dadimi kusuma prabha (ōṃ dāḍimīkusumaprabhāyai namaḥ )

The Divine Mother shines like a pomegranate flower in red colour.

The Divine Mother is beautiful as pomegranate flower. Those who see the nature’s beauty are seeing the Divine Mother ‘s presence in there. Not all have the chance to see the beauty in everything or being in the universe. Those who offer pomegranate flower to worship Her are praising the beauty of the Divine Mother.

Pomegranate tree sometimes flowers and gives fruit. Some trees only give flowers; those flowers are more beautiful than the trees with flowers and fruit. Such beautiful pomegranate flowers are best offered for the Divine Mother’s pooja; She has similar reddish colour as pomegranate flower. She also has tambula in Her mouth and reddish in colour. When the desire is in excess which is not expressed out, the human body will turn red. the Divine Mother is attracted by Lord Shiva and She aids in His dances, Her figure turns red.

The colour of pomegranate flower is a particular shade of red which is especially beautiful. In short, the Divine Mother’s complexions extraordinarily attractive.

The  Divine Mother is reddish in colour, like a pomegranate flower.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 559: Shri Tambula purita mukhi (ōṃ thambūlapūritamukhyai namaḥ)

The Goddess Divine Mother chews betel leaves: Her mouth is full of chewing betel.

The Divine Mother has a beautiful face with full of betel chewing in Her mouth. Tambulam is one of the key things in this worldly life for married women. The Divine Mother’s presence is shining in places where people are happy and peaceful is the interpretation of this Namam.

Married women always have tambulam, which is considered auspicious. The Divine Mother always chews betel leaves to represent the peace and happiness in the world. When She spits after chewing the betel leaves, Indra gets it in his hands as prasadam. When She is giving out Sakti for someone’s words, She spits after chewing the betel leaves.

She is naturally reddish in colour; when Her mouth turns red due to chewing betal leaves, She looks further beautiful. She is doing this to attract Lord Shiva after Lord Narayanan had attracted Lord Shiva in Mohini form.

The Divine Mother likes chewing betel leaves with lime, nuts and fragrances. On such enjoyable occasions, She is particularly generous and dexterous in giving Her grace.

In the invocation of the Divine Mother during Rudra EkAdashini, She is hailed as ‘tAmboola-charvaNa-rata-rakhta-jihvA-virAjitA’ (One who has a blood red tongue because of her constant chewing of betel leaves).

The  Divine Mother is reddish in colour.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 558: Shri Kamalaksa nisevita (ōṃ kamalākṣaniṣēvitāyai namaḥ)

Lotus eyed Lord Vishnu is worshipping the Goddess Divine Mother forever.

Lord Vishnu’s one of the Namams is Kamalaksan, with the meaning that He is Lotus eyed, so Lord Vishnu is called Kamala Kannan.  Lord Vishnu is called Kannan also. His knowledge (Jnana) form eye is attractive to everyone. Past, current, and future activities are visible to Lord Vishnu’s eyes. The Divine Mother is ever worshippable . So Kamalaksan is happily, devotionally, enthusiastically always worshipping the Divine Mother.

Soundarya Lahari verse five states that Lord Narayanan worshipped the Divine Mother and took Mohini form to attract and overcome Lord Shiva. Sapphire is a bluish stone; the Divine Mother’s colour is compared to Sapphire Lord Narayana’s bluish coloured figure. He worshipped the Divine Mother according to Padma Purana.

Lord Shiva has the Divine Mother as Parvathi in his left side as in Arthanareswara. In some places in Lord Shiva’s left side Lord Narayanan is also shown, to be named as Shankarnarayanan (Hariharan) .as the deity. Due to His worshipping the Divine Mother, Lord Narayanan gets that gift of sharing Lord Shiva’s left side.

The worshipped deity must satisfy the devotee’s worshipping needs. Here to the extent the Divine Mother is allowing Narayanan as Mohini to attract Her spouse, Lord Shiva. She is making it look like Lord Shiva was deceived by Lord Narayanan in Mohini form. She is so satisfied with Narayanan’s worship of Her.

According to the Padma Purana, Vishnu attained His own present status by always worshipping the Sapphire-colored the Divine Mother.

Lord Mahvishnu worshipped the  Divine Mother as Kamalaksan.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 557: Shri Kalahantri (ōṃ kālahantryai namaḥ

The Goddess Divine Mother is the destroyer of time (death of time).

The Divine Mother removes the effect of time for us. The universe and its beings are bound by the time factor. Time is absorbing all these beings’ livelihood always. Time in death form is consuming the universe and its beings. The Divine Mother destroys such powerful time. Those who worship the Divine Mother are not bound by the time and go beyond it. This is the greatest grace from worshipping the Divine Mother.

Kala is Yama, the death God and is time. Yama kills the universal beings. The Divine Mother in unison with Lord Shiva, for the sake of Markandeya, destroyed the Yama who usually kills those in samsara Sagara. She controls Yama. When we do not think about the Divine Mother, time is wasted.. The wasted time takes us to Yemen. When we  think about the Divine Mother, Yama cannot reach us.

The Divine Mother is beyond time. She is also the one who removes the effects of evil periods in our lives. In Her presence within us, the time is forgotten or lost. So, She is the destroyer of time.

The  Divine Mother destroys the time  and saves

            Her devotees from Yama.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 556: Shri Katyayani (ōṃ kātyāyanyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is Katyayani, the daughter of Kata Sage.

Katyayani has the power from all deities put together. In praying to Katyayani all prayers to the Divine Mother and other deities are all included and answered.

Sri Chakram, representing universe, has four peetams namely: Odyanam, Kamarupam, Poornagiri and Jalandaram. In each peetam, the Divine Mother is represented by a deity. Katyayani is in Odyana peetam.

All devathas’ shakti are within Katyayani Devi. Gopis in Dhanur (Markazhi) month prayed to Katyayani Devi. As a result, Katyayni participated in Lord Krishna’s actions also, as said in Bhagavatham. The common name Kathayi is from the original name Kathayani.

Vamana Purana says, “The brightness which is the best and greatest became known in the world as Katyayani. Under that name, She, shines and is celebrated all over the world.” Guru Bhaskararaya also points out that Katyayani is the presiding deity in temple of Odyana.

The  Katyayani Devi representing the Divine Mother occupies

one of the peetams named Odyana in Sricakaram.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 555: Shri Kali kalmasha nasini (ōṃ kalikalmaṣanāśinyai namaḥ)

The Goddess Divine Mother is the destroyer of the sins of Kali yuga (the time of Kali).

The Divine Mother removes the Kali yuga sins. In Krutha yuga, dharma is represented by a cow with all four legs.  The dharma was never missed during Krutha yuga. In Treta yuga, dharma cow was standing on three of its four legs, The missing fourth leg  meaning 25 percent adharma was present. In Dvapara yuga, the dharma cow was standing on two legs only, meaning there was, half dharma and half adharma. In Kali yuga, the dharma cow is standing on one leg only and adharma is 75 percent, causing adharma actions everywhere.

Those who worship the Divine Mother, escape the adharma in Kali yuga. They are easily able to get Mukthi. In Kali yuga, there is more who get Mukthi than in other earlier yugas. These are due to the Divine Mother’s grace. So those who devotionally pray to the Divine Mother get Mukti easily and She is Kali kalmasha nasini.

She removes the sins in Kali yuga. Evil thinking cannot talk openly with negativity opposing conditions which are caused by Kali yuga. Due to evil thinking and actions, sins of individuals are accumulated easily. The mind gets corrupted. To remove such sins, the Divine Mother names reciting is the best way and to clean the mind. When we keep the Divine Mother in our minds, all earlier sins are turned into ashes.

Just as Sun rise dispels darkness and water quenches fire, the chanting of the Divine Mother’s names washes away the multitudes of sins of the Kali yuga,” says Kumara Purana. The Brahmanda Purana declares, “The remembrance of the feet of Para shakti is the highest form of expiation for all sins committed, knowingly or unknowingly.

The  Divine Mother removes all Kali yuga sins in Her devotees.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 554: Shri Acintya rupa (ōṃ acintyarūpāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is far beyond anyone’s thought and mind. Universal forms originate from the Divine Mother. The Sun’s rays are not clear to our normal eyesight but when it splits into seven colours, we can see it distinctly. Similarly, the Divine Mother is having the universal form and takes our mind and thought far beyond.

Her form when understood by mind and explainable by words is called Chintita form, which is very small portion of Her total self. Shakti is reachable to all universal beings. Lord Shiva is also far beyond to our mind and thinking. Those who reach the Brahman understand the grace of the Divine Mother.

The human mind is made of three gunas or qualities. Anything that comes to the mind also must be the nature of gunas. The three gunas are:

1.       Rajas is projecting power; passion desire and activity are covered in this.

2.       Sattva is revealing power, purity, positivity, creativity, intelligence, and peace.

3.       Tamas is veiling power, ignorance, inertia, negativity darkness, delusion, depression, and inactivity.

The Divine Mother, on the other hand transcends the gunas. For this reason, She, is described as, “beyond the reach of mind and speech.” (Earlier Namam 415: “Mano vacam agocara” with the meaning that the Divine Mother is beyond the range of mind and speech, was discussed.)

God realization is not a creation of the mind. It is beyond all senses. Thoughts arise in a mind fed by senses. The Divine Mother is beyond such thoughts.

The  Divine Mother is far beyond the reach of our thoughts.
