Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 975: Shri Purvaja (ōṃ pūrvajāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is ahead of everything in this universe.

She appeared (or was there) before everything else in this universe. Mulaprakrti or original Prakrti is the source for all soul’s creation; all such souls return to Mulaprakrti, which has three gunas. Depending on the guna level, various lives are created. Tamo guna beings look more like Jada objects; Rajo guna beings are more of plants and animals; Sattva guna is predominant in humans. From micro beings to Brahma, all originated from Mulaprakrti.

The biological mother is happy as her child grows into a great person. The Divine Mother creates all souls in this universe and in the end, She submits all such souls back to Shiva in Brahman. What we see as universe and what we cannot visualize as Brahman are due the action of Mulaprakrti. It is not moving, yet it creates moving souls. The universe is created, and it disappears during pralaya; for all these, the Divine Mother ‘s shakti is the basis. From Brahman, this Mulaprakrti comes out, it is helping all living souls to mature; we praise it as Adishakti; The Devine Mother as Adishakti is the inner understanding of this Namam. It is a great form of the Divine Mother worship.

“O Saumya, the pure sat (Brahman) is indeed that which existed at first” says the Sruti. It is the same Brahman who, as the original Mula Prakrti continues the correct process. The name Purvaja means the Mulaprakrti or the original Prakrti.

Purvaja also means the first pulsation of that primeval Shakti or the first creation.

The Divine Mother is ahead of everything in this universe.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 974: Shri Bindu tarpana Santusta (ōṃ bindutarpaṇasantuṣṭāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is pleased by devotee’s offering to the Bindu.

She is very happy with materials offered to other Goddesses. All souls are improving in maturity according to their current states. A mature plant takes the form of a seed. Brahmacharyam becomes the best form of achievement for humans. To safeguard their forms, fasting is one good way is the saying. No human being has gone beyond Brahmacharyam. For Bheeshma in Mahabharata, it was his principle to give things sought from him by others. Such an action is called tarpanam. What Bheeshma followed was ideally the Divine Mother’s scheme of things. Bheeshma was considered as a great soul. Any human’s great achievement is compared to Bheeshma’s. Such a scheme of things by the Divine Mother is applied to all living beings.

Universal beings being useful to others is a good thing; the Divine Mother is pleased. For anyone to understand that the Divine Mother ‘s scheme of things to be useful to others and to live by it is a good form of the Divine Mother worship.

In Sri Chakra Meru centre triangle, the Bindu is located; it is where the Divine Mother is residing. The devotee, depending upon his ability to properly offer milk, and honey (Madu) to the Divine Mother here is called Bindu Tarpanam. Here the offered milk in drops is falling on Bindu, it is Bindu Tarpanam also. Bindu is relatively small, yet this offering gives mental satisfaction to the devotee. The Divine Mother is pleased in such Bindu Tarpanam.

Bindu also refers to the Sarvanand Amaya Chakra in Sri Chakra. Tarpana here means doing pooja offerings to Chakra according to prescribed rules.

Following the codes for honoring and sizing others is important not only in humans, but also in Divinities relations. The Divine Mother often says, “only the laziest will say, observances are meaningless, and I will never follow them,” Human life is not an intellectual activity, but an emotional one. Naming a child, giving it solid food for the first time, celebrating its first birthday, and other rituals are a means of showing emotions. The child will anyway, grow without any of these and usually does not demand them, yet they are important as rituals. Rituals are needed; improper rituals are to be eliminated. Rituals are subject to tie and circumstances, Wisemen will correct unbecoming rituals from time to time. The Divine Mother is pleased at this.

Bindu also means intelligence. The Divine Mother is one who is pleased with the worship by wisemen.

The Divine Mother is pleased by devotee’s offering to the Bindu.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 973: Shri Suddha manasa (ōṃ śuddhamānasāyai nama)

The Divine Mother is with pure mind; She purifies the minds of Her worshippers and devotees.

She always has a pure mind. We understand external and internal things with our mind. Krishna says, “He is the mind in all things in life.”

Mind gives the direction for all five senses. When we hear rare, good things, inner meanings of our hearing cannot be understood if our mind wanders elsewhere. The mind is working with all five senses. Through their senses, humans get the resultant achievements. There are as many amounts of mind as many humans in this universe. Depending upon the colour of the glass, the external world is exhibited.  Again, depending upon the state of the mind, all external scenes reach the mind in various forms. For all evil-minded people, the whole world is bad but for the good-minded people, the whole world looks good. Through exercises, evil mindedness can be corrected to good mind is the life’s goal; as the mind is corrected towards good, the external world starts to look good.

All shows in this universe are all same as the Divine Mother. For those who improve or correct their minds to see good, this fact that the Divine Mother is displaying truth that Herself as the universe coming to them. Being pure minded, the Divine Mother is teaching these good aspects to all yogis, and universal beings, as ever. Those who have their mind fully purified become yogis and they see the Divine Self of the Divine Mother.

She basically has a pure mind as ever. The purity of our mind is spoiled by our previous Vasana or Karma from earlier births.  In each birth our mind is desiring such as happiness and sorrow. But these are linked to our earlier births’ Karma. These spoil thinkings of our minds in current birth. The Divine Mother does not face such ill effects; She is beyond happiness and sorrows following Her. She is as ever pure minded.

Pure mind as Krishna says in Gita (II.45) “The Vedas deal with three gunas. O Arjuna, free yourself from the three gunas, from pairs of opposites and ever remain in sattva Guna free from all thoughts of acquisition and preservations, and be established in the Self.”

The ritualistic section of the Vedas deals with three gunas and the desires for the fruits, which always remains in performance of such rituals. The true fulfillment in life is to become free from pairs of opposites and abide in truth constantly. Turning the mind away from actions that are rooted in three gunas and fixing it on the Self with everlasting bliss is true upliftment. Remaining in that state gives purity of mind. When a mind in that state, it is devoid of three gunas and is the essence of the Self. That state, reached by a long process of restraint and sadhana, is the final experience of the Self, the state of external abidance in truth. Since the Divine Mother is constantly in that state, She is called Suddha Manasa or pure minded.

The Divine Mother is with pure mind; She purifies the minds of Her worshippers and devotees.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 972: Shri Asobhana (ōṃ āśōbhanāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is always radiant.

She holds beauty and divinity as ever. Nature’s function has more discipline and auspiciousness. Both external and internal beautiful composures are two aspects of Her divine nature. The internal beauty composure is coming from Brahman which is of Her highest order.

Nature, as ever exhibiting beauty, is a good example and reflection of the Divine Mother’s divinity. The Brahman is functioning as mother of nature. Nature’s living beings are the evidence of the Divine Mother’s blessings. From which, they get all their living needs and live happily in their life. The fish is happily living in the water, will it ask what is water? Likewise, the living beings are not to ask where is the divinity? Natures’ functioning is like daylight, is happening with the Divine Mother’s blessings. So, the Divine Mother is celebrated as Asobhana.

The Divine Mother’s beauty is spread all over the universe and is surrounding Her. Please refer to Nama 462 Sobhana with the meaning that the Divine Mother is always radiant; and Nama 683 Sobhana Sukabha Gatih with the meaning that the Divine Mother is attained through as a bright and easy path. Here Namams 971 and 972 are split into two as Suvasinyarcana Priya and Asobhana.

Sobhana is synonymous with auspicious, prosperous, and beautiful. The Divine Mother is indeed the embodiment of all three good qualities.

The Divine Mother is always radiant.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 971: Shri Suvasinyarcana priya (ōṃ suvāsinyarcanapritāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is pleased with married women worshipping Her.

She is pleased with the prayers and worships by Sumangali ladies. Those ladies who live happily with their own husbands are called Sumangalis or Suvasinis. To live happily is an opportunity for all living beings. Each soul goes through rebirth to reach higher maturity. The Divine Mother’s scheme of things is helpful for such graduation to higher maturity by each living being. This is nature’s way of things.

Naturally a good lady will do all things to meet her husband’s expectations. Such ladies will have a divine look, which can be seen clearly. All natural happenings are based on the Divine Mother’s scheme of things. The husband and wife together having a good loving life is a key thing here.

The Divine Mother happily accepts such good-hearted ladies’ prayers and worships. Such good happenings and good affectionate living ladies are part of divine nature.

The Divine Mother is pleased with Archana done by the Suvasinis. The Divine Mother also likes, Suvasinis are worshipped and respected as the divine forms representing the Divine Mother.

There are Tantric rites in which married women (Sumangalis) are worshipped as the Divine Mother. Sage Ramakrishna has done such worship. This Namam may be interpreted as “She who is pleased by Sumangali poojas”.

The Divine Mother is pleased with married women worshipping Her.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 970: Shri Suvasini (ōṃ suvāsinyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is ever auspiciously married.

Suvatha means the lady with Her husband; Vividha is widow, without her husband alive.

She never ever leaves Her spouse Shiva. In Arthanareswara form, Shiva and the Parvathi Devi share equally; The Divine Mother takes the left side. They both are as ever sharing their life equally. During Pralaya, even though they are together as always, there will be some differences in their appearances. It is customary to understand that in temples, during the night the Divine Mother is with Shiva.  They do not ever eat or sleep and yet we consider them at night to be loving together like any human couple. This is a wonderful concept to understand.

The Divine Mother, as ever auspicious, is in love with Shiva. In tattva basis, they are one in Brahman; yet they are considered as two. Heat and fire cannot be differentiated. The Divine Mother is ever functioning as Shiva Shakti form is the inner meaning of this Namam.

She is as ever living with Her spouse Shiva. For ladies it is a good life to be with their own spouses. The Divine Mother never leaves Shiva. She has Suvatham, meaning that She is living with Her spouse and is called Suvasini. Those ladies who live with their own husbands can only wear good dresses and ornaments to be a Sumangali. The Divine Mother is in Sumangali form.

Suvasini wears always auspicious attire and beautiful clothes. Such clothes are not allowed for a widow by tradition. Shri Paramesvara’s spouse will never become a widow. Parameswara here, signifies Brahman. The Divine Mother, therefore, does not become a widow even at the time of Great Dissolution or Pralaya, because Brahman is beyond time and never meets death.

The Divine Mother is ever auspiciously married.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 969: Shri Suvesadhya (ōṃ suvēṣāḍhyāyai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother is very attractive wearing Her beautiful rich garments and ornaments.

She has auspicious alangarams. Beauty is the Divine Mother’s natural form. Everyone is attracted to Her beauty. The Divine Mother is showing up Her beauty in various places in the universe. There are many stages of beauty. Form, walking style, gestures, appearance, and action are all part of the Divine Mother’s beauty and grace. Her existing beauty can be enhanced without adding any extra material.

If a beautiful person wears a torn cloth, his/her beauty is brought down. Worthy clothes will improve the beauty of the person. To offer and dress up the Divine Mother ‘s alangara forms to increase Her beauty is the first step of devotion for the humans. For dressed up the Divine Mother’s forms adding ornaments will be appropriate. Some people have excessive ornaments on them to improve their beauty. Aesthetic taste is to have measured levels of ornaments. This Aesthetic taste ought to be well understood by the people.

For the Divine Mother in a temple as deity offering the flower malai is a divine aspect. Such flower malai ought to match the background forms of the Divine Mother, without letting the flowers die. Flower malai is good for beauty and happiness, and such malais ought to be fresh as ever.

Sandal paste and reddish Kumkum to be applied to the deities are other divine aspects. We ought to adopt the Aesthetic taste in applying such materials on the deities. With appropriate cultural aspect, such external materials are applied to the deity of the Divine Mother with artifice jnana. Using all devotional kala forms are good for the culture and devotion towards the Divine Mother.

She wears beautiful ornaments. For auspicious form of the Divine Mother, the clothes, ornaments bring out Her total auspiciousness; She is wearing them to give mental satisfaction of Her devotees.

The richness of attire is not for artificial glitter but for simplicity, purity, restraints, and decency. This Namam means that the Divine Mother is one who is proud and graceful in Her auspicious attire and ornaments.

The Divine Mother is very attractive wearing Her beautiful rich garments and ornaments.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 968: Shri Sukha kari (ōṃ sukhakaryai namaḥ)

The Divine Mother gives out happiness.

She creates happiness for Her devotees. A fish is happy living in water. If we take that fish, and give all the comfort on earth, such fish cannot accept such comfort for it. Somehow, every living being must reach and live in a place to suit its needs. The Divine Mother has created such environments for every being in this universe. All beings in this universe, created by the Divine Mother, seek happiness. To be indulged in happiness is the root cause of all living beings.

In this universe, living beings do not always get happiness. Happiness and sorrow are mixed for them. A fish on earthly surface, if it can get to watery surface, it gets happiness and calm; even if the water level is not covering its half body, the fish is satisfied. When it reaches water to cover its full body, it gets reignited.  If it can get to a deep-water condition, it swims around happily. In a sea level, that fish is fully satisfied.

Depending upon the temporary places, the living beings try to get satisfaction, like a micro level being trying to mature to higher level. Nature gives more such opportunities. The Divine Mother’s universal scheme is to reduce sorrow and to increase happiness for all universal beings. Depending upon the maturity level of beings, such sorrowful reductions come in. Also, by seeking the Divine Mother, the souls get some levels of happy state. For those who attain the Divine Mother, get full sorrow elimination and increased happiness. This is the goal of all souls. The Divine Mother, by granting happiness to universal beings, is called the giver of happiness or Sukha Kari.

She grants happiness. She is the spouse of Shiva who holds the auspiciousness within Him. She converts the living being’s sorrow into happiness, and She is called Sukha Kari.

The reasons for happiness are physical and spiritual in nature. The Divine Mother gives happiness to Her devotees based on their actions of dharma and justice.

The Divine Mother gives happiness.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 967: Shri Sumangali (Om sumamgalyai namah)

The Divine Mother is eternally auspicious; She never becomes a widow.

She is as ever in auspicious form. A lady who lives happily with her husband is called Sumangali. Shiva and Parvathi Devi are one such pair; Para shakti is a Sumangali. The Divine Mother’s  sports can be explained in many ways. We cannot explain Brahman with our words. Happiness and sorrow are mixed for all universal beings, which is part of the Divine Mother’s Lila or sport; With Her blessings this ultimately ends in happiness for Her devotees. A snake on Shiva’s shoulders is an alangaram for Him. Yet, if that snake bites an individual, it will be painful incident ending in sorrow for him. Things relating to sorrow are considered as the Divine Mother’s scheme of things for that being. Ultimately when he attains the Divine Mother, all his sorrows will turn into auspicious things.

For those who look at the universe as the Divine Mother’s form, the whole universe looks auspicious. By getting sick, humans mature. Death regenerates the souls. If we look at deficiencies in the universe, we can see more problems. The devotee and yogis see the universe as the Divine Mother’s form. They see auspiciousness and happiness in it. So, it is ideal to call the auspicious Divine Mother a Sumangali.

She is auspicious as ever. All auspicious things reach the housewives living happily with their husbands, who are called Sumangalis.

Doing only commendable deeds, avoiding all contemptible (bad) deeds, is called Mangalam (auspiciousness) by the sages. “One in whom such auspiciousness is present is Sumangali.

Mangala is a synonym for Brahman. Thus, the Divine Mother is none other than Brahman.

The Divine Mother is eternally auspicious;

       She never becomes a widow.

Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 966: Shri Lila vinodini (ōṃ lilāvinōdinyai namaḥ

The Divine Mother delights in Her sport.

She is happy with Her sport activities. Lila is sports; the young girls play in sand to build a house, invite guests for dinner and offer drinks made of sand. Later they destroy the sand structures. So, the young girls use sand to create happiness for themselves. The Divine Mother is similarly forever happy with Her sporting activities. Her children, the universal living beings, are happy. Their universal lives lead to happiness for them,

The Divine Mother is forever engaged in Lila. The universal beings face in turn happiness and sorrow. The Divine Mother is happy to see the sufferings of the universal beings as it helps them to mature and move closer to Brahman. The biological mother looks out for the missing child and feels happy when she finds that missing child. No one can explain that happiness of the child’s mother. Likewise, Lilavinodini, the Divine Mother causes the sufferings for Her universal children and enjoys in that. She never allows that suffering to exceed the appropriate limit. Those who seek and reach out to Her comfort them; like a devotee’s cry gets the Lord’s attention and finally attains Him. Two thugs are fighting and biting each other is a big issue. A young girl who sees such fighting of the thugs, is a Lila Vinodini enjoying happiness through sports. In this world major kingdoms fight with each other. Such massive wars are simply sport for the Divine Mother. She does not see any differences between dog fighting and major kingdoms fighting. So, She is celebrated as Lila Vinodini.

She gets happiness in universal sport played by Her. From Universal creation to dissolution are happening as always for Her. She is making them as her sport and gets happiness.

The wise people say that creation of the universe is a Lila or sport for the Divine Mother; creation, preservation, and dissolution are all part of Her sport and Her pastime activities.

Bhaskaracarya quotes a story from the Yoga Vasistha. There was a king called Padma raja. His wife Lila was a great devotee of the Divine Mother. She prayed to the Divine Mother to bring Her dead husband back to life when he met with an untimely death. The Divine Mother gave her husband back to her and made her happy. Thus, the Divine Mother brought happiness to Lila; the Divine Mother is therefore known as Lila Vinodini.

Goddess Lakshmi has a name Lila; the Divine Mother is called Lila Vinodini because She amuses Lakshmi Devi too.

The Divine Mother delights in Her sport.
