Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 208: Shri Mahesvari (OM mAheshvaryai namaH)

In Namams 199 to 248, the Divine Mother’s Saguna or infiniteness power and glory are described.

The Divine Mother is the spouse or consort of Lord (Shiva) Mahesvara.

The Linga Purana describes Lord Mahesvara. The Linga is the symbol of Mahesvara, worshipped by celibate with pure heart and in celipacy.  The dormant (Tamasic) Mahesvara, he is known as Rudra, when turns as the Destroyer. When He is very active (rajasic), He is known Brahma, the creator. When He is at peace (Sattvic), He becomes Vishnu, the all pervading protector. Thus, Mahesvara is the supporter for the Thri-Murthis. But, at the same time, He is free from three principal qualities or gunAs (Sattva-Raja-Tamas).

The Divine Mother is the sakthi of the Mahesvaran’s. If we learn to see everything as part of Brahman, it is called Mahesvara puja . By increasing his involvement in Mahesvara, the devotee becomes the Mahesvara himself.

Lord Shiva and the Divine Mother are one. Shiva is the Universal Lord. The Divine Mother represents His strengths. The purpose of sakti Puja is, to develop the Divine Mother’s strengths in the devotee’s mind.

Mahabharath says that Mahesvara is the Lord of all creations and human greatness. Mahesvara had been described as the total sum of twenty five tattvas in Hinduism.

Mahesvaran does all three functions namely the creation, stabilization and dissolving. The Divine Mother is the consort of Mahesvara.
