Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 325: Shri Jagatikanda (OM jagatIkandAyai namaH)

In Namams 275 to365, the Divine Mother’s  many forms providing benefits to Her devotees in great details are discussed.

The Divine Mother is the root of the whole universe. Kanda means root; seed or cloud. Gita has a whole chapter, number fifteen, on root; the first sloka in that chapter is worth reading.

When the tree roots have run properly and deeper under the earth, there will not be any damage to life of the tree even if its tree branches or the tree base were to be cut. The Divine Mother is the root for the whole universe and no one can destroy Her. In this universe, many worlds are created and dissolved at all times. She is eternal; She cannot be eliminated. Considering the universe with divinity attributes is a form of prayer for its root or the Divine Mother.

As She is the root of the plant based world, She has and also provides the needed strength. She is holding the world. She stands firm. She helps; like the root of the tree does not expose to outside world, Her presence is not physically shown to outside world. The strength of the root reflects the fully grown state of the tree. For the universe, She is the complete root. Even if the universe grows many times in size or in its weight, She has the power to hold the universe; as such She is standing with full strength as the root of the universe.

The Divine Mother is the root cause of creation of the universe. She is cloud that helping the world with rainfall. She provides the food for survival of the world through rainfall at regular intervals. Sruti says, “From rain come food”.

During pralaya (kalpa), due to Isvara’s heat, the steam and clouds are formed and heavy down pouring of water happens. With excessive rain and water the whole universe is immersed and dissolved. She is causing all these with Her unison with Lord Shiva.

Overall, She is the root of the universe; She provides the food and regular rain fall for the universe. She also provides the flooding to dissolve the universe during pralaya.
