Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 281: Shri Unmesa nimisotpanna vipanna bhuvanasvalih (OM unmeShanimiShotpannavipannabhuvanAvalyai namaH)

In Namams 275 to365, the Divine Mother’s  many forms providing benefits to Her devotees in great details are discussed.

The Divine Mother causes a series of universes to arise and disappear with opening and closing of Her eyelids.

These universes are created when the Divine Mother opens Her eyelids and are dissolved when She closes Her eyelids, as had been described in many ancient religious texts and by sages.

Basically it is understood that the Divine Mother usually does not close Her eyes. However for logical analysis, people say that She closes Her eyelids. In Brahman, the universe is created and dissolved. All actions are happening continuously. The natural actions reflect closing of the eyelids of the Divine Mother.

She is eternal and beyond all time limits. With Her sattvic guna, question may be asked as to how the Divine Mother will choose to close Her eyes. This applies to other devas and deities but not to the Divine Mother. So each time, She opens and closes Her eyes, many universes appear and disappear. She is not fatigued. It is happening naturallyand continuously. This Namam shows that for the Divine Mother universal creation is instantaneous act, at Her will. She can perform creation and dissolution of the universe with the simple blinking of Her eyelids. No additional efforts are needed for Her. It is like sports for Her.

Ajnavatara says “By Her mere wish, the entire universe appears or disappears”. Kalidasa also praises the Divine Mother thus, “Before You think of creation, the universe consisting of the seer (a person endowed with profound moral and spiritual insight or knowledge; a wise person who possesses intuitive powers; a person who is reputed to have special powers of divination), the seen and seeing exists in You in its entirety; when You open Your eyelids at will, the universe appears and when You close Your eyes, it disappears.” Adi Sankara in Soundarya Lahari Verse 55 says, “O Daughter of the king of the mountain, the sages say that the blinking of Your eyes causes the cosmos to be born and to be dissolved. I believe that You now remain awake without closing Your eyes to protect the world, which was created when You opened Your eyes.”

The Divine Mother as Goddess Adi Parasakti.
