Shri Lalitha Sahasranamam: Namam 268: Shri Samharini (OM saMhAriNyai namaH)

In Namams 249 to 274, the Divine Mother’s Five functions and Her Five Isvara forms are described.

The Divine Mother is the dissolver or destroyer of the universe.

To dissolve or destroy the universe to atom level is called Samharam. Sam is associated with auspiciousness. Samharini in essence is to result in auspiciousness; the purpose of regeneration and recreation of universe by first destroying the old one.

During pralaya, the universal five elements (water, earth, air, akashl and fire) are reduced or dissolved into micro level by Isavara, when his tamasic qualities are predominating; he is also called Rudra in this case. The Divine Mother is in His rupam; She is called Samharini as She is part of destroying the universe.

This Namam has also been written as Samdharini (bearer). In the current form of events, it is correct to call and write this Namam as Samharini. This represents the Divine Mother’s role clearly here.

The Divine Mother as Goddesss Durga is ready

to destroy  the evil and do the Samharm.
